OMAHA (KPTM) - On Thursday the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission will hear public testimony on flavored alcoholic beverages, also known as alcopops. The commission will decided whether to classify the drinks, such as Smirnoff Ice and Mike's Hard Lemonade as beer rather than distilled spirits. Right now they're labeled as beer which makes the drinks more widely available and gives them a lower price because of a lower tax rate. Project Extra Mile members say labeling the drinks as beer is against the law. "Under Nebraska law the inclusion of any distilled spirit in a product requires that product to be classified as a distilled spirit," Diane Ribbe, Project Extra Mile member said. "These products are targeted to girls and young drinkers. Unfortunately with fruit flavors, colorful packaging and youth friendly commercials, they are popular," Sara Doghman, Omaha Central sophomore said.
